Article 2: Innovation and the Economics of Sustainability


We may have a tendency to conceptualize sustainable living as something static, something unchanging. However, technical innovation brings a dynamic perspective to sustainability. Remember, sustainability pertains not only to seeking a desirable quality of life for ourselves but also ensuring an equal or better quality of life for future generations. This implies that with each succeeding generation the quality of life must be the same or better than the generation before it. We cannot have a case where your parents enjoy the benefits of certain advancements but your generation is left to live a life equal to that of your grandparents. On the other hand, if a catastrophic event were to lower your parents’ generation’s quality of life in comparison to your grandparents’ generation’s, but your generation lives a quality of life equal to your parents’ then by definition your quality of life is sustainable.
